Arrival of Buddhism to Sri Lanka









            Given the importance fact which happened during the Anuradhapura kingdom was introducing the Buddhism to Sri lankan people who had been worshiping of nature forces such as Stones, hills, Threes, Sun in that time, by Arahath Mahinda Thera. It happened during the reign of king Devanampiyatissa who was one of friends of emperor Dharmashoka. They encountered Devanampiya Tissa at the top of the stone hill of Mihintale. After this meeting, Devanampiya Tissa embraced Buddhism and in order that, monks were established the Buddhism in the country.





Nowadays, Buddhism spread throughout the country Soon the bhikkhuni Sanghamitta arrived from India to establish the Bhikkhuni sasana in the country. When she came, she brought along with her a sapling from the Sri Maha Bodhi Tree, the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, which was then planted in Anuradhapura.
